Overview: language, theoretical perspectives, prelinguistic development, learning two languages, components of language, phonology, semantics, grammar, pragmatics- the use of language in the right settings. Nativist perspective- nature- chomsky: language acquisition device lad- biologically prepares infants to learn rules of language. Their brain is set up to help the learn lang early: evidence, animals have difficulty acquiring language- we are unique. Their brain will make it fluent= biological: sensitive periods- if you miss it you can"t really recover language even if you learn a second language. Your brain expects to hear it at a certain time: limitations, no agreement on universal grammar rules- every language has different rule. If it was innately driven it should be more similar than they are: contradicts observation of development, more expectations, learning involved, children don"t apply consistent grammar structure. Autistic kids have impaired social abilities and as a result lang is affected.
