Document Summary

Organs (ex: kidney: body structure that integrates diff tissues & carries out a specific fx. Cell: cells are the functional units of life (i. e. they can carry out the fx of the whole, such as metabolism) 1/3 extracellular fluid (extra = outside: plasma (20-25% of ecf) B/c our environment is always changing, our homeostatic mechanisms are always compensating. Homeostatic mechanisms may be behavioral, physiological or both. Ex: if room temp decreases, there is an increase in heat loss from body, decreasing your body. One way of maintaining homeostasis is to monitor output. A negative feedback loop is where the product of the pathway turns the pathway off: will return your body to homeostasis, ex: heater turns on, produces heat temp rises heater turns off, stops producing heat. Negative feedback systems are often used to control production, secretion, or activation of a chemical product (ex: testosterone) Local homeostatic responses allow individual cells or groups of cells to change their environment.
