Generalized anxiety disorder marked by constant worrying. Social anxiety disorder marked by fears of embarrassing oneself in front of others. Do not appear till children are 7 or older. Typically dominated by behaviour and somatic symptoms clinging, sleep difficulties, and stomach paing. Unique to childhood, begins as early as preschool years and is displayed by 4 to 10% of all children. Extreme anxiety, often panic, whenever separated from home or parent. School phobia/school refusal fear going to school and stay home for long periods. Psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, family and group therapies, separate or in combination. Play therapy children play with toys, draw, and make up stories; in doing so they reveal the conflicts in their lives and related feelings. 2% of children and 8% of adolescents have major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder: nevertheless, if life situations or biological predispositions are significant enough, even very young children sometimes experience severe downward turns of mood.
