Today we call the strip of light the milky. The part of our galaxy the strip represents is our view through the disk(cid:859)s le(cid:374)gth & (cid:449)e are within the disk. William, caroline & john herschel together made a catalogue of over 5000 nebulae. Herschel used this research to try to identify whether nebulae are distant star systems or nearby glowing gas clouds. If they were gas (cid:272)louds it(cid:859)d p(cid:396)o(cid:448)e that (cid:449)e(cid:859)re the only galaxy in the universe.
