Diaspora Midterm
1. “On Homelands and Diaspora” from Alex Weingrod and Andre Levy
Explain/discuss relevance of passage
o Weingrod and Levy are trying to emphasize the importance of definition of the two terms
‘homeland’ and ‘diaspora’. They explain that these two terms are often thought of as overlapping
terms, however, since there are many different types of diasporas and even within the same
category of diasporas, everyone will experience it differently, we cannot have fixed definitions
for them but rather a more contingent one. They use the example of the terms ‘land’ and
‘homeland’ to try to explain their claims. They say that ‘land’ and ‘homeland’ may be
overlapping terms, but there may be some confusion when there are more than one homelands
associated with the same piece of land. The point they are trying to get across is that we
shouldn’t view these terms to be black or white, but more of a grey area.
o They also mention that there are concerns arising around the pairing of the two terms ‘diaspora’-
‘homeland’ because they are both contingent terms that are used in a static context which tends
to neglect the fact that these terms don’t have solid definitions
Attention to idea/concepts being expressed (importance?)
o Fluidity of diasporic identity
o More than one homeland associated with a land
Link passage to broader theme/issues
o Diasporic identity and how identity is fluid
o Everyone experiences diaspora differently
2. “The Black Atlantic” from Paul Gilroy
Explain/discuss relevance of passage
o Paul Gilroy wants the historians to view the black Atlantic slave ships as a part of the historian’s
history. If we view the world around us today, we see that it is the way that it is because of the
transatlantic slavery and all that happened in that time. The money that the different colonies
have made through the triangle, was used to support their country and help build upon what they
already had to the modern world we see to this day. We view Black history as an add-on, hence
why we only have a month to celebrate it, however, since the world today is shaped from the
black history we should be celebrating it on a day-to-day basis. He asks that we view this as an
overlapping of the cultures that built the modern world rather then separate cultures that have
faded into the past.
Attention to idea/concepts being expressed (importance?)
o The Atlantic is a single complex unit of analysis
o The Atlantic and the impact it had on the modern world
Link passage to broader theme/issues
o We view the Black history as an add-on to our modern world
o We view the history as something simple when in reality it is very complex
o Acknowledge the transnationality and interculturalness of what’s around us
3. “Israel, Diaspora and the Routes if National Belonging” from Jasmine Habib
Explain/discuss relevance of passage
o Jasmin argues against Rich’s terms that diaspora is a practiced relationship to their homeland. It
is because of theories such as these that so many Jews feel Israel is not their homeland
o She also argues that some Jews may feel diasporic to Israel, not because they don’t participate in
tradition, but because they identify with another community such as Canadian or American and
for these people Israel may not mean much to them
Attention to idea/concepts being expressed (importance?)
o Diaspora is not practiced relations with their homeland and not a geographical location
