Document Summary

10. 1: the concept of a gene as a unit of inheritance: genome is a collective body of genetic information that is present in a species. A genome has all the ge(cid:374)es (cid:374)eeded to (cid:862)(cid:271)uild(cid:863) a parti(cid:272)ular orga(cid:374)is(cid:373): mendel mate/crossed pea plants with different inheritable traits to determine the pattern by which these characteristics were transmitted to the offspring. His conclusions were: the characteristics of the plants were governed by distinct factors (or units) of inheritance, which were later termed genes. An individual plant had 2 copies of a gene that controlled the development of each trait, one derived from each parent. The 2 copies could be either identical to one another or non-identical. Alternate forms of a gene are called alleles. One of the two alleles was dominant over the other: each reproductive cell (or gamete) produced by a plant contained only one copy of a gene for each trait.
