Water coming from river was polluted, dangerous to drink. Rulers built large roads after tearing down the city. Used to have much smaller roads, then opened up avenues and squares. Paris is an example of a renaissance city. Whoever has the ability to control a city can control other things. Wide road in paris near the arc doesn"t work in other cities although it has been tried. London had a lot of pollution, paris wanted to be better than london. Wider avenues allowed prevention from people putting up barricades. All classes of people were living in the same building: rich people were on the first floor, middle class were on the second floor, the higher floors were for poor people. No connection between nature of process and outcome. Boulevards attract people because there is always activities going on around, more sense of community.
