Consider the street people; based on their interactions with passersby, they can believe that they are worthless individuals who don"t deserve anything from society. Once individuals or members of minority groups begin to feel worthless because of oppression, they internalize it. Internalized oppression : occurs when targeted people or groups begin to believe the negative stereotypes and misinformation that the larger society communicates to them. Eg. to enter a high class you need to change - an aboriginal becoming white . When you shine light through a prism, it refracts and comes out in different forms. Injustices can be seen as rays of light through the lens of a prism; we see them refract into a set of isms that are comparable with discrimination and oppression. E. g. , age refracted through the prism becomes ageism. The prism transforms a concept to an ism .
