Midbrain, pons & medulla oblongata (closest to sc) Midbrain = most superior, medulla oblongata = most inferior. Center for vital reflexes; heart rate, bp, respiration, swallowing, coughing sneezing . Contain both ascending & descending nerve tracts; carries info from sc up towards cerebrum & info from cerebrum down thru sc. Several areas of grey matter with nuclei. Have a sleep centre involved in rem sleep phase (eyes moving underneath eyelids) Works with medulla oblongata to control respiration. Have pontine nuclei; responsible for communication between the cerebrum & cerebellum. Note: cranial nerve 8 found in both medulla oblongata & pons; b/c when it reaches the brainstem, it splits its neurons and these neurons enter different regions of the brainstem. Cerebral aqueduct runs thru middle of here. Tectum = 4 mounds of grey matter; 2 superior colliculi (visual reflexes) and 2 inferior colliculi (auditory reflex) Cerebral peduncle: region of white matter; bundles of axons carrying motor info from cerebrum thru brainstem sc.
