KINESIOL 1Y03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Habenula, Menopause, Sensory Cortex
Document Summary
Brain part of cns contained in cranial cavity (portion of skull that has the cranial case, 8 bones involved). Made up of 4 main regions: brainstem: connects spinal cord to brain; integration of reflexes necessary for survival. Our relay between the spinal cord and the cerebrum. Brings axons up from spinal cord up to the brain. Synapse: where a neuron cell body comes in contact with axon (where signal can either move on or it ends the relay of signals) Most of it is simply highways for travelling action potentials. Mainly composed of white matter bundles of myelinated axons. Mechanisms that are often needed for survival found in different part of the brain: cerebellum: involved in control of locomotion, balance, posture. Large structure found on posterior portion of brainstem. Projection of the back of the brain stem (attached to it) Although small and only weighs about 10% of the mass of whole brain, it contains about 50% of the neurons.
