Most of art history, especially art history that focuses on work before the 20th century, is populated with discussions about male artists. This seems especially true during the Renaissance. For this assignment, conduct brief internet research on the role of women during this time period. Then, write an essay answering the following question: What pervasive societal value systems were in place during the Renaissance that kept women out of the arts? What conditions needed to change in order for women to achieve a successful career in the arts during the Renaissance? Think about social, cultural, political, and religious institutions and how these various groups in power could have advocated for women to be considered equal.
