Isotopes that do not decay into other elements are known as stable isotopes. A nucleus is stable only when forces between the protons and neutrons are balanced. When forces are not balanced, then the nucleus will become unstable and tends to decay. Elements with an even atomic number are more abundant than those having odd atomic numbers. Isotopes of elements having even atomic numbers are more stable than isotopes of elements having odd atomic numbers.
