Most people think of corrosion as the reaction of a metal with oxygen:

Fe⁰+O₂---->Fe_xO_y

It is in fact an electrochemical reaction, and the oxygen does not need to come into contact with the metal that is corroding if it is connected to it electronically and there is a mechanism for the system to equilibrate charge, i.e. mobile ions. Describe the actual mechanism of corrosion and discuss methods for prevention.

One way of preventing the corrosion of iron is to prevent oxygen and water from coming into contact with the iron. Is this a practical approach to preventing corrosion on a large scale? What are the drawbacks? Explain.
