ARCC 3202 Lecture Notes - Air Barrier, Vapor Barrier, Building Envelope

7 views12 pages

Document Summary

Few condensation problems - always heating buildings. Then put thermal barriers in insulation = condensation. This began to resist heat and cause condensation. Developed in the 1980s, scientists looked at air barriers and saw that the issue wasn"t that vapour diffusion, but rather air movement that brought all moisture on to the wall and into the wall . Air barrier still not fully understood - better understood in part 3 than part 9. Many homes with components but not continuity in air barrier. Vapour diffusion - very slow and uniform process. Air leakage - very concentrated and at the source of the hole. By infiltration and exfiltration - air escaping and entering the building. Depends on the details - difficult process requiring all practitioner communication. Why does air movement/air leakage occur: stack effect. Open window at the top, sucks air in at bottom. Air wants to rise, and is pushed out at top.
