Document Summary

Leaky roofs = most common bldg env problem. Huge part of the construction industry economy. Environmental barriers: heat, thermal barrier, insulation, moisture, moisture barrier, roof membrane, vapour, vb can be separate or combined with moisture barrier, roof membrane, concrete deck. The assembly = all the roof parts together. The roof membrane is only a part of the entire membrane. Roof membrane is on top of roof assembly. From the elements: hail, uv radiation, rain. Any type of roof insulation: usually polyisocyanurate - uses torches. Easier to find leaks: membrane is at top of assembly and visual inspection is possible. Physical damage: uv damage, shrinking , wrinkling, cracking, blistering. Repairs easy and inexpensive: protected membrane roof assembly (pmr) Insulation will get wet as its above membrane. Insulation restricted to water resistant materials: xps, extruded polystyrene (e. g styrofoam roofmate) Any roof membrane that resists hydrostatic pressure. Must hold down insulation: need ballast, weight.
