In a non-union setting the answer is yes an. Employer can terminate the employment of a worker, but the employer would have to give appropriate notice or pay in lieu of notice if there was no legitimate cause for the firing. This would be in the case where the worker did not do anything to deserve termination. In a union setting, an employer may still terminate an employee, but this termination would be grieved by the union and a determination would be made as to whether the firing was justified or not. The pivotal issue in whether a terminated employee is entitled to a severance is the issue of cause . Cause is a good or deserved reason for someone to be let go.
