Biology is the study of life, and our understanding of biology is advancing so rapidly that some have declared the 21st century to be the century of biology. With these advances we also face challenges such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria and an astounding loss of biodiversity. This course is a survey of biology, from molecules to ecosystems, to help you better understand these advances and be an informed citizen. Most of all, we hope this course sparks wonder and a better appreciate of nature. In this unit, we will examine the properties of life and scope of biology. We will also look at the process of science to learn how scientists ask and answer questions. Lastly, we will look at the chemistry of life. The unit provides framework that we will build upon in the rest of the course. Identify the structure and function of the four major types of biological molecules.
