The structure of language: lexicon: the words contained in a language, the vocab. Tree, cat, how (part of the english lexicon: syntax and grammar: a system of rules governing word forms and how words should be strung together to form meaningful utterances. Cat cats, small dog, not dog small: phonology: a system of rules governing how words sound (pronunciation, accent ) in a given language, semantics: what words mean. Nonverbal behaviour: behaviours that occur during communication that don"t include verbal language. Speech illustrations: nonverbal behaviour often gestures, that accompany speech and are used to illustrate/highlight speech. Emblems: nonverbal gestures that carry meaning, like a phrase/sentence. Paralinguistic cues: aspects of the voice that convey information, such as tone, intonation, pitch, speech rate, use of silence. Proxemics: use of space in interpersonal relationships. Intracultural and intercultural communication: messages: meanings that encoders intend to convoy and decoders interpret.
