Document Summary

Review last lesson: analyze craft and goals of a ruler/function of a state. Plato"s thesis: it"s better to be just than unjust. Because justice pays off (read: page 350) Plato believes truth and justice are inexplicably related. If you know justice, you will know truth. Plato says an unjust person is at war with themselves. Socrates: to be just is to be excellent. Plato: to be just is the function of life. Plato asks promiscuous, is justice what the strong demand or is it in the interest of the strong? (different conclusions) Plato disproves his claims because if it"s the second claim, then knowledge is equally important to strength. Plato disproves him again that it"s not whatever people demand, it"s what"s in the interest of a people that matters. Plato says if you organize your life around desires and wants, your life will create unhappiness and you will ruin your life.
