Document Summary
Emotion: a combination of arousal, physical sensations, and subjective feelings that occurs spontaneously in response to environmental stimuli. Mood: a more general state than an emotion. Can be in one mood while feeling a variety of emotions. Generally lasts longer than a single emotion. Motivation: a process that arouses, maintains, and guides behavior toward a goal. An emotion always combines w/ a physical sensation. James-lange theory: proposes that physical sensations lead to subjective feelings. Perceived stimulus speci c physical responses subjective feeling. Assumes that physical states related to each type of feeling are distinct from one another. In contradiction to this: catharsis: a theory of emotion that views emotion as a reservoir that lls up and spills over; predicts that expressing an emotion will reduce arousal. Ex: building up anger and then exploding. One implication is that we might be able to in uence our subjective feelings by changing our physical sensations.
