Demons and withcraft, crimes were a sin and a form of satanic possession. Scientific method becomes more prominent allowing the study of human behaviour to become more advanced. The idea of crime being biologically tied arose, looking at the body could tell you if someone was a criminal or not. Phrenologists appeared (1800-1850 they studied the shape and structure of the skull so as to determine an individuals character and mental capacity. This could also be used to determine criminality ( or so it was believed) Cesare lombroso introduced the theory of atavism in 1876, he was a criminal anthropologist and arguably one of the first people to apply the scientific method to the study of criminal behaviour.
