Crime is not deviant, it is a normal, rational , response to pathological and social conditions. The structure of a society affects the way that people behave, society exerts pressure on individuals to behave a certain way. The structure of u. s society impacts behaviour in two distinct ways: through culturally defined goals and the distribution of opportunities to achieve those goals. Cultural goals are universal : pursuit of material sources based on the american dream . Approved means of obtaining these goals are socially stratified ( unequally distributed among society) There is a disconnect between cultural goals and legitimate means of obtaining those goals.
