Document Summary

Cognition = the basic mechanisms by which people perceive, think and remember and process information. Ex; driving is a high bandwith environment that changes very quickly and it can demand a response in less than a second. Senses gather information, which is then perceived and providing a meaningful interpretation of what is sensed as aided by prior knowledge (top-down processing) Prior knowledge is stored in long-term memory. Perception can lead directly to the selection and execution of a response, but action can be delayed and not executed as we think about or manipulate perceived information in working memory. Rehearsing, planning, understanding, visualizing, decision making and problem solving. It creates more permanent representation of information in long-term memory. Long-term memory = the process of learning and retrieval, the information may be retrieved in minutes, hours, days or years later. Information from long-term memory is retrieved every time we perceive familiar information.
