BIOL3044 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Genetic Correlation, Ipomoea, Heritability
Document Summary
Found unexpected positive correlations to where they expected to find trade-offs. If an organism has a large pool of resources to draw from, they are able to put it into both fitness components. If an organism has a small pool of resources to draw from, they have less resources to put into their fitness components. Trade-offs might get hidden behind variation in the amount of resources that organisms are able to acquire. Trade-offs and the correlated response to selection: ex. Plants that produce large flowers can only produce few of them, while plants that produce small flowers can produce a lot of them. We expect to find a correlated response to selection. These beetles eat plants in similar species ipomoea purpurea and deloya guttata. Prediction: our prediction is that for a trade-off to limit or constrain adaptation, we expect there to be a negative genetic correlation between the two components of fitness.
