BIOL3044 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Analysis Of Variance, Total Variation, Heritability
Document Summary
We have 20 families of half siblings, with 10 individuals of half siblings per family. There is a reason for each step. Anova is the study of sources of variation: the differences among observations. Examples where variations may occur: treatment vs control, genotype vs environment, source location vs applied treatment. But to get anova right, the sources of variance must be uncorrelated with each other. The data we collect must be good data and properly collected. In this experiment: all aa individuals were raised in a dark environment, all aa individuals were raised in a wet environment, all aa individuals were raised in a cold environment. After individuals have grown, a trait is measured such as leaf area. Knee jerk answer: farmer john could select on his cattle to increase milk production, offspring resemble parents selecting for cows that produced more milk yield would eventually increase overall milk yield. It would take years (cows need to mature, breed, etc. )
