CHEMISTRY 211 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-3: Pentane, Addition Reaction, Condensation Reaction
Document Summary
Isomers are molecules that have the same chemical formula; they have the same atoms in each molecule, but differ in the order in which the atoms are connected. The different order of the atoms produces two completely different molecular structures. Reactions of organic compounds: combustion or burning is the reaction of a substance with oxygen to produce new substance and heat energy. Example: coal + oxygen---------------carbon dioxide + heat energy. Co2 + heat: addition reaction is used to produce the coal gas at high temperature. Coal + hot steam @ high temp-----------methane + h2 + co2: condensation reaction is the union of atoms in the same molecules. Polymer is a substance consisting of large molecules that are made up of smaller repeating units, or monomers. Most of the organic substances found in living matter such as protein, wood, chitin, rubber, and resins are polymers.
