Document Summary

Endocrine system study guide: describe the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands. Endocrine glands secrete substances into the internal environment- diffuse into the bloodstream and eventually act on cells (target cells) a distance away. Substances include hormones, paracrines (affects only neighboring cells) and autocrines (affect only the secreting cell itself. A hormone is a biochemical secreted by a cell to affect the functions of another cell. The action of a hormone is restricted to a specific target cell that has protein receptors for the hormone. Functions of the hormone include: help regulate metabolic processes. Aid in the transport of substances across membranes. The pituitary gland attaches to the hypothalamus by means of the infundibulum. When one"s stressed, the stressor goes to the hypothalamus, which produces a stress response. One way negative feedback can work: hypothalamus controls the anterior pituitary gland"s release of hormones that stimulate other endocrine glands: explain how a positive feedback loop works and give an example.
