Document Summary

Low se = feel less good/uncertain about self. For most self-esteem us stable over lifetime (i. e. trait) But short term variation following pos/neg feedback (i. e. state) Some evidence that some people fluctuate a lot in response to feedback making them highly responsive to praise and overly sensitive to criticism. No difference in your self esteem and how much people like you. Little evidence that hse causes better outcomes (except in romantic relationships) More evidence that self-esteem is consequence rather than a cause. In north america, some minority groups score higher on average. North americans score higher than east asians in self esteem. When we measure self esteem across groups/cultures in other wats we find similar results. Cultural differences in acceptability of reporting high opinion of self may explain patterns of results. Suggesting relatively equal self esteem across all humans. Self esteem functions as an ongoing thermometer of our level of acceptance or rejection by the group.
