Document Summary
The heart is located within the thoracic cavity and is enclosed within a broserous sac called the pericardium; both of these structures have roles in protection and support of the heart. Learning objective: describe the location and position of the heart in the thoracic cavity. The heart is located posterior to the sternum left of the body midline between the lungs within the mediastinum (me d -as-t n m; medius = middle) ( gure 19. 5). The position of the heart is slightly rotated such that its right side or right border is located more anteriorly, whereas its left side or left border is located more posteriorly. The postero-superior surface of the heart is called the base (not labeled on gure 19. 5). The inferior, conical end of the heart is called the apex ( peks; tip). It projects slightly anteroinferiorly toward the left side of the body with the right ventricle lying on the diaphragm.
