Document Summary

Carbohydrates are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or substances which yield such compounds on hydrolysis. Monosaccharides are simple sugar containing a single polyhydroxy unit . Monosaccharides can be aldoses or ketoses . if the carbonyl group is in the end of the carbon chain and is and aldehyde than it is a aldose. If the carbonyl group is in any other position is a ketone and it is known as ketoses. Oligosaccharides consist of short chains of monosaccaride units or residues joined by characteristic linkage called gglycosidic linkage. Disaccharides are most abundant with two monosaccharide units. Polysaccharides are sugar polymers containing more than 20 or so monosaccharide units. Glycogen have branched chain . both cellulose and glycogen have recurring units of d-glucose . the glycosidic bonds in them are different and have consequently different properties. in cellulose the structure is linear and units are joined by 1.
