Document Summary

Three-phase ac induction motors are widely used in industrial and commercial applications. They are classified either as squirrel cage or wound-rotor motors. These motors are self-starting and they produce medium to high degrees of starting torque. Popular applications include grinders, lathes, drill presses, pumps, compressors, conveyors, farm equipment, electronic cooling and other mechanical duty applications. Various types of ac induction motors are available in the market. The windings are connected in wye and are geometrically offset by 120 , the two windings in each phase are wound in the same direction. At any instant in time, the magnetic field generated by one particular phase will depend on the current through that phase. This field, which always follows the same axis, is at its maximum when the current in the winding is maximum. If the current through that phase is zero, the resulting magnetic field is zero.
