Document Summary

Electrical motors power hundreds of devices that we use daily. A machine can contain several set of windings: field windings purpose is to set up a magnetic field in machine. Current in field winding is independent of the mechanical load imposed on motor: armature windings carries a current that depends on the mechanical power produced. Motors are powered by ac or dc sources: ac can be single or 3 phase. Induction motors most common, relatively simple rugged construction and good operating characteristics. Synchronous motors run at constant speed regardless of load torque. Three phase synchronous machines generate most electrical energy used in world. Variety of special purpose types: dc nearly all electricity energy is distributed as ac. Dc motors are employed or starting (ie. automotive applications) Direction of current in armature conductor on rotor is reversed periodically. Speed and direction can be controlled more readily than of ac motors.
