PSYC 401 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Receptor Antagonist, Muscarine, Cholinergic
Document Summary
Location of cholinergic receptors biologically active agents that alter cellular function. - receptors made up of proteins, multiple receptor sites: receptor a physiological entity present in (on) cells. It is a site of action for: acetylcholine cholinergic receptors - nicotinic and muscarinic, serotonin serotonergic receptors 5-ht1 5-ht7, nicotinic- comes from tobacco, muscarinic- comes from a plant, nicotinic agonists- mimic neurotransmitter, nicotinic antagonists- blocks the affect, muscarinic agonists. Parasympathetic - cardiac (-) and smooth muscles of the iris, stomach, Drugs affecting cholinergic receptors: blocks uptake of choline- levels of ach goes down. Imipramine (tricyclic)- increase levels of serotin; fluoxetine (ssri) Serotonergic receptors morphine, heroin the tendency for a drug to attach (bind) to a particular receptor process body. Most common method used, but one of the most variable. Enternal route through the gastrointestinal system- oral. Parenteral route outside of the gi system- typically injections.
