The ability for a party to get its supporters to back its candidates is a sign for how powerful and important the party is. May be a way in which a party changes its policy positions. Puts control over who controls the party nationally. Makes it so that the contest in the general election is not competitive. Candidates make choices in the general election more meaningful. So many options and the parties limit it down. In the us, the national government has very little control over who runs. The ability to say to a candidate who has won the votes, no we will not accept you under our party. Political parties aren"t mentioned in the constitution but they are obviously very important in electoral politics. How these various things function as linkages - effectiveness, strengths, shortcomings, underlying democratic values.
