Document Summary

Each organelle in a membrane system has unique lipid concentration, protein concentration and function. Focus is on mitochondria and its role in respiration. Mitochondria represent 40-50% of organelle in eukaryotic cell. In a cell that demands a lot of energy there will be a lot of mitochondria. Thought to have emerged from a symbiotic relationship with a eukaryotic cell and evolved through time. Have their own circular genome that is organized in the same way bacterial genomes are organized: encodes very few genes, most are coded in the nuclear genome. 2 membrane system outer and inner membrane. Proteins exist in the outer membrane layer in the membrane: porins, carbs can just flow in and out without transporters. Intermembrane space: aqueous compartment between inner and outer membrane. Inner aqueous filled compartment = matrix (inside inner membrane: houses the mitochondrial genome and its own site of ribosomes to transcribe and translate proteins. Tca cycle takes place in aqueous compartment of mitochondria.
