Littrans 204 - lecture 27 - dovlatov"s suitcase(4/12) 70"s were very prosperous years due to high oil prices. Rapid decline of soviet economy in 80"s. Early 60"s seemed like a time where soviet system would be fixed by allowing public debate on soviet issues, people had hope for this. Moscow circles was written during late 60"s after disillusionment of the idea that public debate would be allowed. Unofficial culture -- distributed literature and self published or published in foreign lands without soviet govt permission. A product/member of generation that was animated by hopes of post- Never succeeded or tried hard enough to establish self as soviet writer. Tried to create dual careers for himself as a journalist (published by soviet press and journals) --never successful in getting his fiction works published, only 2 were published. Spent most of his life in leningrad -- parents were evacuated from leningrad during german siege.
