Schools were initially just for the elites. Dominant views (eg. g. stanley hall first psychologist of note) Before compulsory secondary education, high schools were for the elite. By 1920s, educators called for curricular reform to match changes in social composition of schools. New focus on preparing youth for life in modern society (roles of work and citizenship) General education, college prep, and vocational education all housed under one roof. Vocational school: lots of physical space for workshops. 14-17 year old population increased dramatically between 1910 and 1940. Continued to increase until 1970 where it began to level off. For larger industrial countries the ratio of men and women going to school is close. For afghanistan and ethiopia there are significantly more boys going to school than girls. Play an important role in defining social world. Academic self-conceptions and occupational choices leading to identity. Peer, teacher, and staff = community membership/or not.
