Ca 155 - lecture 17 - interview techniques. Before you start interviewing anyone ask yourself: Remember you are both a reporter and a casting director. You are in a relationship with the person you are interviewing. Start with warm up questions to develop trust and comfort level. Don"t ask yes or no questions because it"s hard to expand on that. You can affirm what they say by nodding your head and smiling. If subject is struggling to answer something, look down for a moment so they can find their words. Divide labor so one partner conducts interview, other focuses on technology. Find locations that make interview easier not harder. If you want something to sound spontaneous, don"t read a script. Give yourself spaces to pause -- you can make things sound continuous during editing. You are in charge of the interview. If you need to interrupt to get the conversation back on topic, do so.
