ART HIST 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Vincent Van Gogh, Post-Impressionism, Georges Seurat
Document Summary
Less interested in sensory experiences, and wanted to bring in conceptual form and ideas of space. Analytical in representing scenes (seurat: georges seurat, a sunday on la grande jatte, 1884-86. Pointillism: little dots of color repeated all over again until getting an illusion of a person/scene. Depicts parisians in leisure, just lounging around. Interest in what color can do and its arrangeme(cid:374)t; (cid:272)olors (cid:271)le(cid:374)ded (cid:271)y (cid:448)ie(cid:449)ers" eyes. Creates illusion of space with sharp, diagonal lines that lead to right corner, trees grouping together. Rhythmic sense between the figures on the lawn. Tending towards abstraction: georges seurat, les poseuses (the models), 1888, oil on canvas. Response to criticism; critics thought he was incapable of depicting life. Painting shows the same model three ways; back toward viewer, full frontal, and then on right sitting profile. References his own painting in the background: vincent van gogh, japonaiserie: flowering plum tree, 1887. Basically a copy of a japanese print.
