PHIL 1750 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Theism, Secular Ethics
Document Summary
Chapter 3- pojman (religion gives meaning to life) If there is a benevolent supreme being governing the unvierse then the following theses are true: we have a satisfying explanation of the orgins and sustenance of the unvierse. We are not the product of chance but of a heavenly being who cares for us. From a valueless universe, objective values will not miraculously appear, nor can purpose derive from purposelessness: theism holds that the universe is suffused in goodness and that good will win out over evil. We are not fighting a desperate battle alone, but god is on our side: god loves and cares for us. His love compels us, so that we have a deeper motive for morally good actions, including high altruism. We live deeply moral lives not out of fear of hell but out of deep gratitude to one who loves us.
