PHIL 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Secularism, Consequentialism, Theism
Document Summary
Theism: belief in god and that god created the universe and god governs the universe. If theism is true then: we have been created by god (or a heavenly being) - who loves and cares for us. Theism tells us that things have a purpose. Our product is only as valuable as the material in which it is derived: the universe has good in it and good will prevail over evil. We"re not fighting the battle alone because god is on our side so we must not fight in vain. The thought of ultimate victory of justice and love is what gives us the confidence to fight against injustice and cruelty: we live deeply moral lives in gratitude of god because he compelled us to be moral. Altruism is stupid and antilife: we love god and that love guarantees justice (karma), there is no moral luck - cosmic justice rules the universe, everyone is of equal worth.
