Document Summary

Stimulus: body temperature deviates from normal set point. Sensory receptor: neurons in the hypothalamus detect the change in temperature. Integrating center: neurons in hypothalamus compare input from sensory receptors to the set point. Effector if below set point: blood vessels to skin contract. Response if below set point: heat is generated and body temperature rises. Effector is above set point: blood vessels to skin dilate and glands release sweat. Response if above set point: body temperature lowers. Enhance a change to get further from set point. Not common, but labor contractions are a good example. Stimulus: fetus" head pushing against cervix or uterine opening. Sensory receptor: receptors in the inner uterus detect the stretching. Integration center: brain receives information from the receptor and compares stretching with the set point. Effector: pituitary gland is stimulated to increase secretion of oxytocin. Response: oxytocin cause an increase in uterine contractions. These mechanisms do not in and of themselves maintain homeostasis.
