SOC 302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: October 8, Montemurro, Drachten
Document Summary
According to john lofland deviance occurs for fun or thrill while participating in what he calls adventurous deviant acts . What lofland means, is that we do prohibited activities not only because violating the rules is fun, but also because we find the prohibited activity itself is fun. For instance, deviance is performed in bachelorette parties when the bride-to-be feels legitimated to free herself during a temporary suspension of certain social expectations. She takes a time off from responsibilities and she behaves somehow between a child and an adult. Discussion question 2: the term techniques of neutralization is strongly related with deviance. Explain what the concept of techniques of neutralization is and how it can be applied on the previous example of bachelorettes parties. When otherwise rule following individuals violate a norm, they justify their behavior using techniques of neutralization. According to sykes and matza when one uses techniques of neutralization, one is denying responsibilities.
