Culture and society: culture, de nition: the sum total of a people"s mental, material, and digital creations. Stories that get passed down; ideologies about how the world should work; democracy; capitalism; socialism; music; languages; traditions; rituals; technology; clothes; food; etc. Culture affects the social structure and it is affected by the social structure. Ex: language is an important part of a group"s culture. Values are used to justify the norms: statuses and roles (internalize): status refers to a position that you occupy in social space (student, professor, man, woman, mexican, white, etc. ) Role refers to the cluster of norms that attaches itself to the various statuses that we occupy. (we are all sons or daughters, students, some are employees, some are members of fraternities or sororities, etc. ) A role as a son/daughter is to respect parents, help with chores, represent the family well, have children, take responsibility, etc.
