Nofunctional Proteins
• Null Mutations or Null Alleles – mutations that eliminate gene function
• Nonfunction proteins – alleles that produce nonfunctional proteins are recessive
Types of RNA
• tRNA - mediate translation of mRNA codons to amino acids
o Translation happens in cytoplasm
o tRNAs carry anticodon on one end – 3 nucleotides complementary to mRNA
codon
o Primary – nucleotide sequence
o Secondary – short complementary sequences pair, making clover leaf shape
o Tertiary – folding into 3D space shape like L
Wobble
• Wobble – some tRNAs recognize more than one code for amino acids they carry
o 5’ G = 3’ U or C
o 5’ C = 3’ G
o 5’ A = 3’ U
o 5’ U = 3’ A or G
o 5’ I = 3’ U, C or A
Haplioinsufficiency
• Haplioinsuffieciency – one wild type allel is not enough
o Example: T-locus mutants in mice
Hypermorophic Mutants
• Hypermorophic Mutants – more active protein
