Document Summary

Gene shu ing that results from sexual reproduction (crossing over/independant assortment) Chromosome contains 2 double-stranded dna molecules (sister chromatids) Prophase 1 of meiosis (occupies 90% of time for meiosis, 74 hrsish) replicated hmologous chromosomes line up and are phsyically conncted along their lengths by the synaptomenal complex, process = synpasis. Genetic rearrangedmnt btwn nonsister chromatids = crossiver over chiasmata. Once synaptonemal complex = disassebmbled, joined homologous chromsomes are visisble as a tetrad. X- shaped regions calle dchiasmata are visbile as the physical manisfestation of crossing over. Does not occur in mitosis: inmostanimals, including humans, gametes are the only haploid cells, plants andsome algae have a second type of life cycle called alternationof generations. This life cycle includes two multicellularstages, one haploid andone diploid. The multicellular diploid stage is calledthe sporophyte. Meiosis in the sporophyte produces haploid spores thatdevelop by mitosis into the haploid gametophytestage.
