Document Summary

Sickle cell hemoglobin mutation alters primary, tertiary, and quaternary protein structure. Adding energy makes the molecules move faster which can disrupt bonds. Dna deoxyribonucleic acid: double stranded, has an h on the 2 carbon of pentose. Rna ribonucleic acid: single stranded, has an oh on the 2 carbon of pentose. Link nucleotides together through dehydration reaction: 3c on pentose sugar bonds with phosphate group. Pentose sugar loses a hydrogen and the phosphate group loses a hydroxide. Add nucleotides to nucleic acid in 5" to 3" direction. Pyrimidines: (one carbon ring) 6 membered ring, include cytosine, thymine, and uracil. Purines: (two carbon rings) 5 membered ring attached to a 6 membered ring, include adenine and guanine. Dna runs antiparallel: one side runs 3" to 5" and the other side runs 5" to 3". Adenine bonds with thymine: have two hydrogen bonds between (weaker bond) Cytosine bonds with guanine: have three hydrogen bonds between (stronger bond)
