Document Summary

Phospholipid bilayer: has two fatty acids for tails, has a hydrophilic head. Plant cells are usually bigger than animal cells: single celled amoeba is around the same size as a many celled dust mite. Cytosol vs cytoplasm: cytosol is the actual fluid, cytoplasm is the content within a cell membrane minus the content in the cell nucleus. Folding in the cell increases the surface area and increases the exchange of nutrients between cells: this is really important in intestinal cells. Rough er functions: be the site of protein synthesis, site to where ribosomes bind, rough er keeps making more of itself because it gives part of it away when it makes vesicles to transport proteins. Smooth er functions: detoxifying makes toxins water soluble, makes lipids (steroids, cholesterol, pulling in calcium and storing it. Chloroplasts: found in plants, sites of photosynthesis (use carbon dioxide to transform light energy into sugar)
