BIO 301D Lecture 17: Bio301D- Language and Concepts-3.1
Document Summary
Bio 301d language and concepts 3. 1. Today: language and concepts: correlation, correlation is not conclusion, centrals, experiments. Refute or reject: the data so disagree with a model that we abandon. Accept (consistent with): the data do not cause us to reject: a) support- data might have refuted model but did not. We have gained confidence: b) irrelevant- data has no bearing on model: no matter how they turned out, they could not have refuted model. E. g. data on lunch cancer rates do not inform about almost everything else- physics, chemistry, most of biology: c) weak- data are relevant in this case but we don"t have enough data for them to be useful. Absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence. Lack of evidence for something does not mean we can rule it out. We do not necessarily know anything, maybe no data. Yes (model being rejected: there are aliens on earth)
