BIO 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Lipid Bilayer, Nuclear Membrane, Organelle

17 views2 pages

Document Summary

Compartmentalized-different compartments to perform different function in each cell. Most organelles are membrane enclosed by phospholipid bilayer. Different process can occur at the same time in each cell because each are separated. Cytosol-organelles are arranged in this, semi-liquid fluid outside the organelles. Many of the pores are continuous with the hallow part of the endoplasmic reticulum. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum-tubular looking er that has no ribosomes. Er looks different form place to place-flattened sac like area has dots on the outside are ribosomes-attached to the er (rough er) Rough endoplasmic reticulum-part of the er that is studded with ribosomes and is the flatter part. Ribosomes that are attached to the er-attached ribosomes. Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis-they are no membrane closed/bound. Free ribosomes release the synthesized protein into the cytosol and carry out their function there (each have a different role and function for the cell) Attached ribosomes some proteins are released/secreted to the outside of the cell (insulin)
